Presentation and Graphics

Trench Warfare

The Game!

Greetings Folks. The game has been brought some well required changes to the primary scene, with this devlog primarily covering presentation and graphical changes made in V0.40 (this version) of Trench Warfare. The changes also dive loosely into enemies and interaction although that isn't the main focus of this log.

What’s new in this update?

This update brings, as discussed briefly above, some vitally important user interface and presentation changes which come in the form of:

  • Interactable Health Bar
  • Canvas / Overlay Images
  • Scripted Animated Overlay Text
  • Weapon Round and Magazine Counts
  • Basic Weapon Reloading Mechanic

Canvas overlay, animated text, introduction to weapon reloading and healthbar uses can be viewed from the popup gifs and still images below!

This GIF shows us a closeup look at the healthbar morphing and value changes. These values will later be decreasable by enemies and gainable through 'boosters' and healers in later versions of the game!

User Testing

The user testing for this update centred for obvious reasons around the new user interface and polish elements of the update and had a generally positive view of constructive criticism to give.

“The new UI elements are certainly well needed, but I think you should add more to the interface and some post processing effects. They will help you with the player emersion, as-well as various additional sound effects.”

This is, for obvious reasons, extremely useful feedback and are additions of which I intend to add in sequential version updates.

Next on the horizon?

Currently, the next major update will bring further polish and UI subtle changes. It will also aim to bring enemy destruction mechanics, character states and animations, a variation of sound for each effect to select from and a bucket load of fresh materials with which to swamp the field.

Terrain modifiers are also planned, these plantations will give the player and colliding characters specific (often negative) effects such as slowed movement and perhaps even damage modifiers, and are designed to represent terrain impairments of light artillery such as mortars and howitzers present in the great war battlefields.
